Exams

Students take two exams in each course at the ALTD.

The first exam takes place in the middle of the course. Its purpose is to test the student’s improvement and to diagnose the student’s weak and strong points. This test helps the teacher, as well as the student, to better concentrate on the needs of the student. This test comprises 30 % to 35% of the student’s final score, depending on the student’s course level.
The second exam takes place on the last day of the course. This test comprises 55% to 60% of the student’s final score, depending on the student’s course level. The student’s participation in the class, punctuality, homework and other activities comprise 10% of the final grade. In the higher levels there is a grade for research.
Evaluation scale for the SARC program (implemented starting from course nr. 10 of SARC 2008):

Students must pass each course before being allowed to advance. Success depends on the student’s attendance and final grade from the tests, which differs from level to level. Students must attend at least 80% of the total teaching hours at any level to fulfill this requirement. Student who miss more than 20% of the teaching hours are not eligible to submit the final exam. They also fail the course, though they are allowed to continue attending the course as an auditor.

Documents and Certificates

I.          When the student passes a course, she/he can ask for a Certificate of Accomplishment. This certificate includes the date of the course whish a student completed, the level, number of hours of instruction, and the student’s final score. The certificate is given for each course separately. It’s issued only in Arabic and approved by the Higher Language Institute’s Administration. The Certificate of Achievement can be also certified at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the student. The fee of the Certificate of Achievement is 200 S.P. paid to ORSA when requesting.

II.        Transcripts of Grades in Arabic or in English. It includes the detailed grades of all the courses that a student has finished. The transcripts are certified by the Higher Language Institute’s Administration. You can request these documents at the ORSA. The administration will tell you the time when your documents may be collected. The fee of the Transcripts of Grades is 500 S.P. paid when requesting.

III.       The Arabic Language Department, upon request, may provide a Letter of Attendance in Arabic or English. This document is free of charge. You can use this document also when applying for the International Student Card at the relevant company.

For students who would like to apply for temporary residence (Tourist visa) or who would like to extend their residency may request an official statement from the University of Damascus via the ALTD. The student then takes this document to the Immigration Office (Al-hijrah wa Al-jawazaat ) in Damascus to verify the student’s registration. Students are advised to consult both the Office of Student Affairs in the Higher Language Institute as well as the Immigration Office in Al Baramkeh (in front of the science department) for current information regarding options for staying in Syria.

(Note: This official statement is not issued for periods that exceed the length of the student’s studies at the ALTD. It is issued only when the student is currently enrolled in courses.)

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees for levels 1-6: 18000 Syrian pounds.

Tuition fees for levels 7 and 8: 23000 Syrian pounds.

Placement test fee: 500 Syrian pounds.

Notes:

Fees are paid at the Office of Student Affairs in the Higher Language Institute.
Fees are paid in cash for one course at a time. Syrian currency only.
After payment, there are no refunds, no option to postpone your course, and no exchanging with another student. This policy is not negotiable.
Fees for books and other materials are not included in the registration or placement exam fees.
